Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin”

By Jade Curtis

Tom Petty is famously known for his hit single “Free Fallin’, ” which is one of my favorite songs. He was born in Gainseville, Fla., on Oct. 20, 1950. He is widely known for his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Petty decided to leave high school to establish and tour with the band ‘Mudcrutch.’

After Mudcrutch broke up, Petty decided to go off on a solo career, and made the album “Full Moon Fever,” which features his famous song, “Free Fallin’.”

Tom Petty like many people has had personal setbacks on his road to fame. In 1985, he broke his hand punching a wall out of frustration, and only two years later, his home burnt down.

After the setbacks, everything was worth the long road, because in 2001 he made it into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.  His band took an eight year break, and released an album in 2010. Then they played their last time in Bonaroo in 2013.

Tom Petty has now been married twice.  He had two daughters with his first wife, Jane Benyo, and is now married to Dana York,  living in New York since 2001.

As a tribute to Tom Petty and one of his most famous songs, Mr. Riley and I performed the song Free Fallin’. Check out our performance below. If you’re having trouble viewing the video, you can watch it on WeLearnTube here.
